Reading with Elephant & Piggie

You guys! We just found the best kids books ever. Ok, we found it a while back and I only finally managed to get around to talking about it.

We’ve been trying to get the kids to fall in love with reading since they were born and on the scale of being interested in books, Tru has mostly been on the end of “not entirely impressed”. We got them tons of Dr. Seuss, Julia Donaldson, Oliver Jeffers, and he does sort of join in our reading sessions but often with very little enthusiasm.

And then a friend bought them a book from the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems.

Total gamechanger.

Tru loved it. He almost never voluntarily picks out books to read on his own but these days, we often spy him sitting on the couch with a book in his hand and a smile on his face and I AM SO THRILLED to see my son in love with words (and pictures!). He thinks they’re hilarious and he’ll be giggling to himself while he reads. Did I mention that he’s reading them on his own? He still struggles with some words but his reading has improved tremendously since he started on these books and yes, I can’t stop raving.

The husband was so impressed he went out and bought the entire series from book depository.

You know what? We love these books so much I’m doing a giveaway – just a little something on the house. I have two of Truett’s favorite elephant and piggie books up for grabs. Just leave a comment below with your favourite kid’s book of all time and two winners will be chosen randomly. Contest ends at 11.59pm on Friday, 27 December.

My girl just love The Hoozles series book by Jessie Little which we discovered by chance at the library. The stories revolve around a little girl named Willow who discovered the special Hoozle toys her aunt Suzy makes in her shop are magical toys that can come alive! The stories shared her adventures with her Hoozles and how they fend off naughty Crocs attempts to snatch away Hoozles’ “heart” in their pockets which is a special item put it their pockets by their owners and gave them life.

My daughter’s loves any book with Diego – her recent favorite is the rainforest race. And her hobby now is ‘stage director’, where she makes her baby brother and me act out the characters in the stories. I hope this new series of books will save me from having to ‘tumble down slopes’ and ‘leap from tree to tree’.

My kids and my favourite is a picture only book of The Lion and The Mouse. When my husband bought it when my eldest was 2, I thought it was strange. As it turns out, the story is told a little differently each time it is “read”. Nat is 5 now and she tells the story to her younger brother and baby sister. It truly amazes me how creative a child’s mind can be.

We love Mo Willems around here too! My 3yo daughter’s favorite Elephant & Piggie book has gotta be Should I Share My Ice Cream? You should check out his other books like the Pigeon series, which has the same coversational story structure, and also the Knuffle Bunny.
Another cool series is Pete the Cat by Eric Litwin. Also Fancy Nancy books by Jane O’Connor…bet they’ll be a hit with your princess lovin’ daughter, as they are with mine. We’ve also read just about every book by Laura Numeroff (If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, etc), James Marshall (George & Martha), Arnold Lobel (Frog & Toad), Anna Dewdney (Llama Llama). All available at the public libraries.
So many other great books…too many to list here!

Our all time favourite is What do people do all day? by Richard Scarry. My 3yo will request to read this every night amongst others. And he likes the part on ‘Firemen to the rescue’ best that he aspires to be a firefighter … We are planning to bring him for a visit to the firehouse one of the Saturdays soon. Hope he enjoys it.
