You know there’s a point in every pregnancy where you officially feel pregnant? And yes, by pregnant, I really mean fat.
It’s what I like to call the point of no return because it all just goes downhill from there.
The first 3 months or so, you can get by without looking the least bit pregnant. You get to parade around in regular non-maternity clothes and enjoy still having a waistline. And while the morning sickness is annoying, it does help to keep the weight gain at bay.
But that all changes right around the second trimester. Your body decides that because it’s carrying another human being, it needs to start accumulating fats like there’s no tomorrow. You have to have that box of durians at 2 o’clock in the morning. That bag of chips is just sitting there calling out to be eaten and you lose all willpower against the evil forces of Nasi Lemak.
I have a former colleague who had the misfortune of only knowing me in my heavily-pregnant state. We started working together when I was 6 months pregnant and because I left my job shortly after giving birth to Tru, the only version of me he knows is the one lumbering around with the 170-pound ass. I met him again last year at the Singapore Blog Awards and when I went over to say hi, he stared at me blankly for a whole 5 seconds before going “OMG Daphne, it’s you! I couldn’t recognize you, you look so…different, uh…good!”
It was a nice compliment and the honesty was refreshing but I realized that to him, I was that fat chick from the office. You know this whole pregnancy weight gain thing? It really sucks.
I just spent the last 2.5 years trying to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight through a combination of several painful methods including breastfeeding, strenuous physical exertion and far too much starvation. And now that I’m finally able to fit into my size 28 jeans, I’m ballooning out of control.
I was out shopping with the husband over the weekend and I’m found myself shopping in the maternity section because my beloved size 28’s is giving me a massive hernia. I was determined to wear it for as long as I could this pregnancy and I barely made it to 13 weeks.
It’s so depressing.
The husband says I’m still beautiful and tried to take my photo to prove it but I’m all “if you take my photo, I will cut you.”
So excuse me while I spend the rest of the day wearing ginormous sweats and eating ice-cream.

Hi,
Not trying to make things worse…me too!! I used to be size 28…and during my second pregnancy…never once did I take any pictures of myself…none!
After I gave birth, I dare not dream of when I can get back to my old jeans. But hey…looking at my 2 ‘angels’ at home, I am a hot-rocking-happy mommy!
Enjoy and cher up :)

LOL you’re right! Just a little bummed that after working so hard to lose the weight, it’s all coming right back.. but when I look at the kids, it’s totally worth it
u can always look good even when you’re pregnant! just take care of yourself and of course the baby! there are so many options for maternity clothes that are fashionable at the same time comfortable! cheer up girl! those fats will be damn ignored if the baby’s out and smiling at you! :)

True that! Plus an excuse to do more shopping – that’s always fun
Being pregnant, means having the luxury to binge, and worry later :p
Anything, anytime, anywhere.
Of course, it helps when I compliment my Mrs that she still looks good with her tummy.

Hahahah that’s what I tell myself every time I’m pregnant. Eat first, talk later.
I’m only 6.5 weeks preggers and showing a tummy already!! Looks like I need maternity clothes (argh!!) way earlier than most people. TSK.
That’s normal! I’ve had a tummy quite early on too but at least I could still hide it with some flattering tops.
But recently, it’s gotten too big for my jeans and when I force myself to squeeze into them, I feel like passing out from the lack of oxygen.
Oh yeah, I hear you, Daphne! But it sure helps to have supportive hubs who are always there for our grumps. ;p Nonetheless, enjoy your pregnancy!

Haha I will enjoy the eating for sure. :)
I hear ya….29 weeks today and so far at least 20something pounds heavier. Didn’t manage to bounce back all the way after bb one. This time round gotta make the commitment. Last appt, doc says, “whoa, hold on back!”.
Sigh….
Definitely can be done, I lost most of the weight by doing the 30-day shred. It’s amazingly effective but brutal.
And I like your doc, very um, tactful.
You are not fat. You are baking a baby!
I happened to do a lot of yoga, swimming and walking in my last pregnancy so I put on an acceptable amount of weight. 28 lbs or so, lost it and more after pregnancy due to breastfeeding. I know it’s not going to be as easy for the next one, since I won’t have as much time to exercise.

wow 28 lbs is very good! I put on 60 the last round so if I do 28 this pregnancy, I’ll be very happy.
Everytime I look at my spare tire (yes it’s still there after 3+ years), I tell myself (AND the husband) that this is a gift from the babes and (I guess) I’ll be keeping it for awhile….
Wahahaha that’s one way to see it. I sort of prefer my gifts not to be concentrated around my abdomen area but you’re right, still kind of sweet if you think about it.
I gained 20 kg during my pregnancy.. and lost 18kg by the time my baby turned 6 months. (My boy was 4.1kg at birth coz I sorta over ate during my pregnancy) Then I stopped breastfeeding and 5kg came back instantly. So, keep breastfeeding to lose that baby weight. Kill 3 birds with 1 stone – lose weight, provide baby food & save money on milk powder.
Yes the breastfeeding is like magic! It’s the only reason why I managed to last 9 months even though my boobs felt like they were going to fall off from all that pumping.
Hey, at least you can prance around looking slim as ever during your first trimester. Everyone could tell I was pregnant by like 8 weeks and when I announced it after the first trimester danger zone they were all like “we knew already, der!” That said, I only gained 7kgs net throughout and it was thanks to gestational diabetes therefore a diet comprising like 15% carb and 85% anything else, as opposed to the typical Singaporean diet of 70% carb or the typical Chinese preggy diet of 95% carb. Try it! Or not. I was miserable. Just enjoy it and lose it through breastfeeding or whatever other tried and tested method that got you back to your slim good looking self after Kirsten :)

I’ll try your low carb diet idea but I’m probably not going to last very long. When I’m pregnant I’m go carb crazy, like all I want is carbs. Rice, noodles, pasta, bread, potatoes…
Hats what happened to all pregnant ladies. Those who hardly put on weight are just in a world of their own. Anyway, after the third one, you can breastfeed and watch the weight drop.

Have you taken nude photos in your pregnant state? I think those look very beautiful if taken well, with taste and style. I’d want to take that kind of photos when I’m pregnant one day. Not those completely nude ones la. You can cover your bits with carefully positioned hands and props.

I think I took a total of 5 photos when I was pregnant haha. And towards the end I only fit into a total of 5 dresses :(
At least u managed to get back into your jeans.. I’m still trying hard to fit into it without having to hold my breath! Haha
