Club Med Coolness

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Club Med has been on our holiday bucket list for a while and I’m glad we finally managed to check it out last weekend with all 3 kids. It was a glorious, sunshiney weekend to head to Club Med Bintan, about an hour’s ferry ride out from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.

Being the first time we were bringing baby Finn along for a holiday just the two of us (without any additional adult help), we were a little nervy about the adult-kid ratio. Plus there’s my pregnant belly which reduces mobility by about 70%, so it was effectively like 1.5 adults vs 3.5 kids. It’s a good thing Truett and Kirsten are such seasoned travellers, which helped a lot.

awesome kids club

One of the best things about Club Med is their system of GO’s (Gentil Organisateur). They’re a bunch of young, energetic and enthusiastic Club Med crew who run all the activities, including the super awesome kids club (Mini Club Med). The Mini Club Med program runs from 8.30 in the morning till 5 in the afternoon (they even eat together) and the kids had such a great time hanging out with their newfound friends and GO’s.

Evidently, we’re big fans of Mini Club Med because that means we get to chill out and take a breather while the kids are off having fun.

While they were at the kids club, they got to try out a whole bunch of really cool activities like the trapeze, trampoline and archery.

I think the trapeze was Tru’s absolute favourite activity. He panicked a little as he started climbing up the ladder but my brave little trooper powered on and took the leap. He made it look so fun that if I wasn’t pregnant, I’d definitely be trying it out myself.

Baby Finn was a little too small to join Mini Club Med unsupervised so he got to spend some quality time with us, which he was thrilled to do. I’ve never seen him look so happy – he was yelling “AWESOME…YES!!!” everywhere he went.

Ok, only one of these 3 are really sleeping.

NIYAMA Resort Maldives – the destination of dreams

Sitting here looking out at the beautiful baby blue ocean and golden sands with my flute of bubbly in hand, I’m certain of one thing, that NIYAMA Resort Maldives by Per Aquum is an unparalleled piece of island paradise.

Nestled on this little atoll is perfection – the  combination of luxury, tranquility and exquisite charm, topped off with the most spectacular view anyone can ever hope to see.

Quite often, you look at amazing photos of a place and when you actually get there, you realise that you have to knock off at least 30% for photoshop skills or great composition. But here, photos don’t even come close to capturing how breathtaking everything is.

Being here feels like a dream I never want to wake up from.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

First of all, arriving at NIYAMA Maldives must be done in style, via a seaplane. It’s 45-minute flight out from Male international airport and there’s something so very James Bond about getting on board a seaplane; makes it all feel like a real adventure. It’s one of those things to check off one’s bucket list and I’m glad we did.

Sidenote: it was equal parts cool and terrifying to be 3 feet away from the pilots in the cockpit, which might I add, has no door so we could watch them in action the entire flight. They were working all these levers/buttons like a pro and the whole time I was thinking, “all it takes is just one wrong button and we’re quite literally swimming with the fishes…ALSO DUDE WHY IS THAT RED BUTTON BLINKING FURIOUSLY??!!”

The kids thought it was super awesome, so that’s that.

Once you arrive though, you immediately start to feel all your problems slipping away. We stepped off onto the jetty to a welcome party of friendly staff offering cool towels and a refreshing lime juice for us and a handwritten note with bracelets for the kids.

“How did they know our names?” Kirsten whispered, clearly impressed by all the attention she was getting.

Shortly after, we were whisked off by Ashley, our Thakuru or personal butler (who happens to be from Singapore!!) to a stunning water pavilion with private pool and jacuzzi at number 50, our home for the next couple of days.

It’s a palatial one-bedroom paradise with an adjoining living room that opened up to an infinity pool and a jacuzzi overlooking the shimmering Indian Ocean. The beds were luxuriously soft and fluffy, the living room was equipped with every possible amenity we could want (Nespresso machine, fully-stocked private wine bar, separate fridge, popcorn machine, bubbly on ice, microwave, Bose sound system) and the bathroom was an absolute palace, featuring separate open air shower and toilet areas that gave you a view of the fishes swimming below as you showered. The bathtub was bigger than anything I’ve ever seen, it could fit all four of us with room to spare. Seriously, it was so huge it could fit a baby elephant if it wanted to.

Apart from the spanking new luxurious digs, the hospitality of the staff was the cherry on top of an already decadent, triple-frosted, sugar coated, scrummilicious chocolate fudge cake, so to speak. All the staff we met were so warm and friendly that we felt right at home. Also, their dedication to housekeeping was phenomenal. On our last night, there was a massive thunderstorm as we hopped out for a quick dinner and when we got back, we discovered that they had rushed to spruce up the room even in the crazy storm.

In short, NIYAMA redefines luxury. In fact, it takes what you used to know as luxury and blows it all the way into the stratosphere many times over.

This was the view we woke up to every morning, just endless crystal blue water that disappeared into the sky. It’s hard to imagine life being more perfect than this. I’m hardly a morning person but for a view this spectacular, I was up every morning at 5.45 to catch a glimpse of the morning sun peeking out on the horizon.

As were the kids, who decided that life was infinitely better with early morning pre-breakfast somersaults into the jacuzzi.

Suffice to say, our Maldives experience at NIYAMA turned out to be far better than anything we could have possibly dreamed of. It was the best of days filled with relaxing conversations by the ocean, dreams of pretty sunsets and amazing family time lounging in the pool.

*More to come on the activities and food, stay tuned!

Off to the circus we go!

We did lots of fun stuff in NYC but one of the funnest was visiting the Big Apple Circus in Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. We don’t have circuses back home and I’ve never been to one but I knew enough about them to know that I’d really love it. In fact, numero uno on my bucket list is to join the circus for a day. Maybe one day I will but for starters, I got to visit a circus so I guess that’s counts for half a bucket list achieved. Sort of?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I hear there’s no better circus for a first visit (or second or third visit) than the Big Apple Circus. It’s a proper circus with that delicious old school charm and a big top and a ringmaster and tightrope walkers and trapeze artists and everything else circuses should have. Including hotdogs and popcorn and lots of candy floss. It ain’t a circus without candy floss, amirite?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All the acts were so, so good. Kirsten’s favourite was Ty Tojo, 15 year old juggler extraordinaire. This guy has mad juggling skillz yo. During the show, I had no idea he was 15(??!!) because he’s insanely talented. At one point, he had 7 balls up in the air at the same time and he caught every last one of them with his 2 tiny 15-year old hands.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All the other acts were equally impressive. Half the time, I was on the edge of my seat trying not to look (because OMG stop all that crazy flinging in the air!!) but at the same time, it was all so fascinating that I couldn’t look away even for a second.

And Truett’s favorite? The Dosov Troupe or as Tru likes to call it, the human catapults. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. They made it look so effortless as they teeterboarded each other up into the air for backflips and somersaults. It’s the kind of thing one dreams about doing as a kid – having someone flip you up into the air with a giant see-saw.

human cannonball

I can’t believe we actually got to visit a real circus and I loved, loved, loved every single minute of the 2-hour show. I almost wanted to yell for an encore when it ended but the husband told me that’s not how circuses work. People clap and then get up to leave politely. But seriously, this circus should totally do an encore, it’s that good.

*Hat tip to Phil from the Big Apple Circus for the invite and tickets.

milestones & musings

Looking back to look forward

It’s New Year’s Eve, the one time I allow myself to look back on the year with fondness and regret. To over-analyze the decisions I made, to pat myself of the back for the glorious victories and cringe while reliving the sucky ones. I actually really like the idea of new years. To be able to close a chapter every 12 months and whether it was good or bad, turn the page and start a new one.

2011 was the year I found myself again. For the first time in 3 years, my life was not chopped up and divided between the kids, with the leftover scraps going to all the other responsibilities that clamored for my attention.

This year, the kids grew up just enough to take the pressure off a little. They learnt to depend on each other for entertainment and I stopped feeling like I was living on the edge for every minute of every day. Heck, I even found the time to go for coffee in the morning, have high tea with girl friends, rediscover my love for movies and even read actual grown up books with tiny words and too many pages. Who’s with me in feeling like if you had to read another page of “This is Peter, This is Jane”, your brains would melt into your ears and disappear from your head because it got upset at all the abuse it was taking.

In short, it’s the year I’ve enjoyed motherhood the most.

It’s also been a year of unexpected but awesome surprises. We went to Disney World, Orlando for the Disney SM Mom’s 2011 Conference, went to Melbourne with the kids, won the Best Family Blog at the Singapore Blog Awards, made it to the finals for Nuffnang Asia Pacific Blog Awards and the 2011 Bloggies, had lunch with the President, launched a business just so I could call myself The Boss and the most awesome of all, sent the kids off to school. I totally got my ass whipped by home-schooling and the best decision I made was to cut my losses and let school take over the schooling. Everybody wins.

The beautiful thing about the start of every new year is that it always brings hope. It could very well turn out to be the worst year of our lives but until that happens, there’s always hope that it could be the very best one yet. So c’mon, blow the dust off from your bucket list and at least attempt one. If you don’t have a bucket list, it’s probably a good time to get one started.

Do something for yourself. Do something for someone else. Do something that scares the crap out of you. Do something that everyone else thought you couldn’t do. Do something you’ll remember when the next new year rolls around. Feel alive. Love fervently. Laugh till you can’t breathe. Be furiously happy.

See you in 2012.

unqualified parenting tips

Saying no shouldn’t have to be this hard

Before I had kids, I used to take issue with over-indulgent parents who gave in to the every whim and fancy of their precious (and usually obnoxious) offspring. What happened to the good old fashioned N-O? It’s relatively simple, a “no sweetie, you can’t have that extra fifth helping of ice-cream” or “no, shoving that helpless blind guy is wrong, pumpkin.”

I was so sure that when it came to my turn, I’d be the parent who knew how to say no. But turns out, saying no to kids is like running for elections against the PAP – very difficult.

First of all, it’s a primal parent instinct. There’s something about popping an 8-pound human out of your bits that makes you want to give them everything they ask for. Like “look kid, I’ve given up my career, my holidays, my shopping and my privacy, I might as well just throw in that shiny new swingset. You want that 300-piece dollhouse too? Bam, done. And while we’re at it, here’s every single Beyblade known to humankind.”

And then there’s the fallout that is just so fun to deal with. The pleading, the tears, the dramatic soap opera wails, and every other weapon in the arsenal every kid. Sometimes I consider saying no when they ask to have that last pack of gummy and I’ll spend a moment thinking of the impending meltdown and I totally chicken out because I am literally too exhausted to deal.

This morning, baby girl woke up and with her sleepy eyes, she asked if I could bring her for a helicopter ride. I mean, most kids ask for a toy helicopter but no, my kid wants to be up on an actual helicopter. And I know that she knows what it is because she’s been watching Pixar’s Cars where Mater gets to go on one of them fancy helicopter rides. I’ve never even gone on a helicopter myself but now that’s the latest addition to my bucket list. Bring my baby girl for a spin in a helicopter.

The way I see it, there’s nothing wrong with indulging the kids every now and then. I can’t help wanting to give my kids the best and if that comes in the form of a spanking new Playstation 3 or a helicopter ride, there’s nothing wrong with that.

But it’s important that our kids don’t grow up with an entitlement complex and we try to do it by teaching 2 things: gratefulness and patience. To be thankful for the things they do get and patient in waiting for the things they don’t.

That’s probably why we sometimes say no to them just for kicks. And when they respond with maturity, they usually get what they want sooner than later.

Happee Day

We’re almost there…

This morning I woke up and I was telling the husband that we’ve still got 2 weeks to Happee Day and he was all “It’s next Sunday, babe…” which got me into a mild panic attack because with the food poisoning debacle, I’m up to my eyeballs in overdue work and now I realize I’ve got 11 days till Happee Day.

But my coffee fix and deep breathing exercises have restored some perspective so there’s really no need to panic. Besides, I’ve got some kickass updates coming up. Give it up for…

1. Chili Api, who will be sponsoring a mouth-watering spread of Peranakan cuisine for the event. We were really hoping to get them on board because you know how you go for an event and the food is at best mediocre so you do the polite thing and pick at yet another awful springroll and then stuff the rest into your purse when no one is looking? That’s not going to happen here.

Because there will be this.

And this.

And this.

And other incredible stuff that will make you want to skip dinner the night before just so that you can have more. And when you’re done, you’ll want some more and you’ll get them for all your parties and events so you’ll always be able to have more of that Peranakan goodness.

2. Jimmy the Juggler, who will be performing a juggling gig for the closing finale. With fire. Seriously, I’m not making this up. I have never seen anyone juggle fire torches in real life so that knocks an item off my bucket list. He gives new meaning to the term playing with fire and I am so going to get him to autograph my shirt. But don’t get your hopes up ladies, he ain’t gonna be lighting your fire anytime soon because this smoking hot guy is happily married with a 6-month-old boy.

3. Ice3 (Ice-CUBE) Cafe, who will be providing homemade super premium ice-cream for everyone. There are few things in life that are better than having a nice cup of ice-cream on a hot day outdoors. Except maybe 2 cups of ice-cream.

4, Evelyn, who is sponsoring an instant photo printing booth so every kid can get their picture printed as a souvenir.

5. LPN Art School, who will be keeping the kids’ creative juices flowing with a Halloween-themed art activity.

6. Chai Lee, who will be having a cake-decorating booth so the kids will be able to have their cake and eat it. Literally. Right after they decorate it.

7. Charmaine, who’s baking some deliciously sinful brownies and cupcakes for the kids.

I’ve done a first round of RSVP for all the volunteers and if you would like to help out but haven’t registered, let me know soon ok! 11 days, we’re almost there.

Call me trigger happy

The husband came home with my birthday gift over the weekend and let me just say that it is hands down the BEST BIRTHDAY GIFT I’ve gotten so far. Even better than the time he made me a precious moments card with glitter on it. You know how sometimes you get a present and you’re like “oh wow, thanks for the thought, I guess”. This is not one of those times.

And remember the time I came up with a bucket list? Obviously I still haven’t gotten around to doing any of them, which I’m not entirely surprised at, seeing that it involves stuff like running away and joining the circus. It’s the kind of thing you do at the spur of the moment when all the stars align and you’ve had a lot of booze. Well, the stars have aligned and I’m finally going to start on one of them, so I’m real excited.

See where I’m going with this?

Yes, the husband came back with a Canon DSLR camera complete with a 50mm lens and my goodness, it is exquisite. Jaw-droppingly so. I’ve been caressing it non-stop since it came home to momma and I foresee that this is going to be the start of a very expensive hobby.

I’ve never been a trigger-happy kind of girl. I don’t whip out my camera to capture all those wonderful kodak moments. I don’t hold up two fingers with a peace-sign and flash my pearly whites every 25 seconds. I don’t make people gather and snap group shots at events. I don’t have 50,000 photographs stored in my hard disk.

This is mostly because I take awful shots and I end up looking like Chandler Bing in most photos. I see all those girls with perfect smiles and mine always look like a cross between a grimace and a scowl.

My wedding photo shoot (which was shot by a ridiculously talented fashion photographer friend) was one of the most harrowing experiences in my life. The whole time, he was all like “stop grimacing”, “show me some emotion”, “close your mouth”, “strike a pose”, “NO, DON’T EVER DO THAT AGAIN” and I was like an awkward fourteen-year-old. I’ve since come to terms with the fact that my best Angelina Jolie impression looks more like Mick Jagger on a bad day.

All that is going to change though. This new baby takes some incredible shots and I am so in love.
