Finn

The hair effect

Baby Finn was born with the most glorious hair and I’ve done a Samson on him by refusing to let anyone cut his hair from birth. I loved the poofy, gravity-defying hair he used to have but it’s all grown out and floppy now, which is still cute in a different sort of way.

Only thing is that everyone has been commenting on how long his hair is and even though I dress him in manly togs, 9 out of 10 strangers will assume that he’s a girl. So much so that these days, I just roll with it.

Stranger lady: She’s so cute, how old is she?

Previous me: Actually HE’S a boy.

*Awkward silence.

These days…

Stranger lady: She’s so cute, how old is she?

New me: Thanks! Um, almost 7 months.

Stranger lady: I like her hair!

New me: Yeah, me too!

*Slightly less awkward silence.

Anyway, I’ve decided that it’s finally time for baby Finn to have his first haircut. I thought of bringing him to the place where Truett does his hair but then I figured that since it’s a relatively minor trim, I could save the money and do it myself.

Yeah, I didn’t know that I had it in me to cut hair either but motherhood is all about discovering new skills, innit? That, and saving $20.

So this morning, I put him in his Bumbo, brought him out to the corridor and started snipping. The husband had to entertain him with a song and dance routine to stop him from wriggling and I managed to make it through without accidentally jabbing him in the carotid artery with my scissors.

The plan is to keep his hair long like Henry LaMontagne from Criminal Minds so I only took off a bit of length at the back and evened out the sides.

Voila, what do you think?

My son is 3 years old and he has never had a haircut. His hair hangs to his lower back and he is constantly mistaken for a girl. I just let the person think he’s a girl now. No harm done. I am concerned about when he is old enough and aware that people think he looks like a girl. However, for the time being, there is no way I am cutting my son’s hair. It is BEAUTIFUL!

Wow he must be gorgeous! Actually it doesn’t really matter what others think as long as you like it and he does too. :)

I think you did a great job! I cut Angel’s hair for the three years that we were in Sweden but decided to spend the $20 and let her have a real haircut when we came back. And guess what? Both my girls have the same gravity-defying standing armani styled natural hair like Finn’s. =) And funny thing is, it makes people think my #2 is a boy nowadays!

Serious? You cut her hair for 3 years?? Nicely done! I tried cutting Kirsten’s hair once and it was a terrible disaster. These days, I only cut her bangs and even then, it’s usually uneven.

You know, when they say your current one looks like a girl, your next one will be a girl! It’s somewhat true in that sense! :D

    • Reply Daphne March 21, 2013 at 11:38 pm

I hope so!! I mean, *IF* I have another one, I’d really like a girl to balance things up a bit.

Now he really looks like Kirsten! I shaved my second son’s hair 2 months back and now he looks like an army boy with the buzz cut, bleah. Upside is that his hair is growing out pretty fast!

He looks cute with his buzz cut! Btw does the hair really grow out faster? Or thicker?

      • Reply qiu xian March 22, 2013 at 9:55 am

It depends on the baby lar, cause I also shaved my first one and his took FOREVER to grew back hahaha. My second one’s hair is thicker and coarser so maybe thats why it grew back faster? I dunno man lol.

Finn looks so adorable! And I think you did a great job with his hair!

    • Reply Daphne March 27, 2013 at 2:51 pm

Thanks Sara! Upon closer inspection it’s a little jagged but good enough for a corridor cut heh

  • Reply Andrea March 24, 2013 at 11:20 pm

U r good! Think u brought out his natural highlights!

    • Reply Daphne March 27, 2013 at 2:52 pm

Lol I’ll be very sad when his tuft of highlighted hair grows out and needs to be cut off. The rest of his hair is starting to turn blackish already

  • Reply esther March 25, 2013 at 12:22 am

Oh I think baby Finn looks super adorable with longer or shorter hair! And I so love Truett’s hairstyles too. May I know which salon do you usually bring him for his haircut? I’m fed up with the neighbourhood stylist who likes to chop off my son’s lovely sideburns and wispy fringe despite my requests not to do so.

    • Reply Daphne March 27, 2013 at 2:53 pm

Thanks Esther! Tru goes to this kids salon at Tampines One Level 3. Can’t remember the name but it’s the only one just next to the escalator. :)

First of all I want to say superb blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to
ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find
out how you center yourself and clear your head before writing.
I’ve had trouble clearing my mind in getting my thoughts
out. I do take pleasure in writing however it just
seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend
to be lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips?

    Thank you!
