How to experience “the life” in Bangkok

Instead of doing our rounds across Bangkok city like we usually do, we spent most of our time exploring the Mandarin Oriental’s hotel grounds and just soaking in the incredible atmosphere. Which turned out to be a good move because the one day we hauled the kids to Chatuchak market, we spent a grand total of 12 whole minutes exploring before the kids delivered their “I’m so tired and it’s so hot, let’s go back to the beautiful hotel” spiel.

But we did at least get to eat the delicious wanton noodles that I’ve been dreaming about so… score!

It was fun just hanging out at the hotel though. One of my favourite sections was the Author’s Lounge, which forms the Author’s Wing, the original wing of the hotel. We hear it’s THE place to get married in Bangkok and I can totally see why. I stood at the top of the stairs and had a little Titanic moment – I have a thing for grand staircases, even though there’s a 42% chance I’ll trip and fall on my face in heels.

The Author’s Wing is made up of a handful of suites named after the authors who’ve stayed at the Mandarin Oriental. Not too sound too uppity but it’s true – famous celebrities are great and all but authors, they lend an air of class and refinement. Writers like Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham wrote some of their books sitting in their suites and looking out over the Chao Phraya River.

We were taken on a tour of the different suites and each of the author’s suites are designed to reflect the personalities of the various authors, some very regal, some elegant and understated, some flamboyant. I can’t decide which one I like best.

On one of the evenings, we had a BBQ buffet dinner at the Riverside Terrace and the experience was exceptional, both in food quality and attentive service. The selection of fresh seafood, roasted cuts and even sushi was divine. We don’t do a lot of fancy sit down dinners with the kids in tow because they’re volatile in confined spaces and there’s usually a lot of frantic food shovelling required.

But this time, they were on such good behaviour that we were a little surprised. They ate their food promptly, asked for seconds and thirds, made polite conversation, it was all very enjoyable.

Maybe it’s a sign of age but this new way of experiencing Bangkok has trumped all the other Bangkok trips combined. Then again, the kids had an equally fabulous time.

Truett summed it up best when he sat back at the pool with his hands crossed behind his head and said, “ahhh, this is the life.

Why yes, yes it is.

Kidzania – way more fun than it sounds

While we were in Bangkok, we were introduced to this gem of a place called Kidzania. It was SO MUCH FUN (with double exclamation points!!) that I was a little surprised I haven’t heard about it before.

At first, we were expecting one of those regular run-of-the-mill sort of indoor kid playgrounds that are so popular back home. Some jumpy things, a couple of slides, lots of soft padding, maybe a handful of interactive play sections, you know the sort.

This was not that at all.

If you ever head to Bangkok with kids, trust me, you have to go to Kidzania. It will rock your socks right off.

First of all, the theming is brilliant. It’s an entire world of exploratory play for kids aged 4-12 and the coolest part is that they are meant to do everything on their own. Parents can hang around to give encouraging pep talks, throw some hi-fives and cheer a little bit but the kids are the ones who really run the show.

So the moment they enter, each kid given a credit note for $50, which they have to exchange for cash at the bank.

They were a little nervous at first because we had to wait outside while they did their thing but they came out looking very pleased with their first solo bank transaction.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Armed with their wad of cash, they could then decide on which activities they wanted to do. The place is made up of like 80 different activity stations, each with a customised training activity for kids. Some activities were like work activities, and they’d earn money at the end of it.

Like this fire station activity, where they got to practice being little firefighters and then take a ride on a fire engine to put out a pretend fire. It was all organised really well and THEY WERE SO THRILLED to be doing grown up stuff like it was real.

Watching them, I almost died from too much cuteness.

Turns out that Truett’s dream job was to be a car mechanic (I had no idea!). He had like the best time changing a car tire, so much so that the husband decided to let him do it the next time we have a flat.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

While Tru was having his Greased Lightnin’ moment, Kirsten decided that she wanted to be a petrol pumper person instead. Is this the most enthusiastic petrol pumper you’ve ever seen or what? And let me tell you, girl can work a petrol pump like a pro.

I mean, till this day, I still don’t know how to pump my own petrol (I usually just smile and say “Uncle, 95 full tank 谢谢!”) so that’s one skill she’s got over me.

petrol pumper

And hello there, Mr Postman (and little postlady).

These 2 courier delivery guys were given a task to deliver packages to various locations and they did a super fine job of it. Seriously, I’ve never seen finer courier service in all my years of signing for delivery packages. If these were my courier guys, I’d be shopping online ALL. DAY.

hey mr postman

Besides the various jobs to earn more dough, there were also spending activities, where they’d have to spend their money to learn new skills. As a rule of thumb, the spending activities came with a reward that they could enjoy, like their very own handmade sushi or burger.

At the sushi station, there was a sushi master to guide them through each step and after 15 minutes, voila! They each had a beautifully rolled sushi for lunch. I don’t even know how to make my own sushi and there I was, eating sushi that my kids made, which by they way, was delicious.

The Meiji milk bottling plant was another really cool spending activity. They were like little scientists, learning how milk is made, bottled and kept fresh for drinking.

We spent 5 hours there and it was barely enough to cover 30% of the whole place. There were so many other activities that we didn’t have time to try, like the recording studio, the performing arts class, the CSI lab, the courthouse and tons of other cool stuff.

In a nutshell, awesome, awesome place to visit with kids.

Absolute bliss at “La Grande Dame”

So, Bangkok! We just got back and I’m going to come right out and say that the single best part of the entire trip was our stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.

I’ve heard legendary tales about the hotel that’s affectionately referred to as “La Grande Dame” along the Chao Phraya River. Built in 1876, she’s the oldest and most celebrated hotel in all of Bangkok, possibly the most luxurious anywhere in the world and she has hosted a long and impressive list of writers and celebrities. Joseph Conrad, Paul Theroux, Sean Connery, Tom Cruise, Judi Dench, they’ve all been guests at this splendid hotel.

Just being there was an experience in itself, the kind that takes your breath away. And it’s not just the luxurious interiors or the gorgeous landscaping either, because those are easily replicated. This is one place that has such a rich history, it’s like taking a trip back in time to experience this breathtaking old school charm and luxury.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We were hosted in a stunning, (I mean jaw-dropping kind of stunning) family suite and the moment we stepped in, we all had no words to describe it. All the kids could muster was a hushed “woahhhhh…”, which I guess, pretty sums it all up.

The suite was absolute bliss. Two gorgeous bedrooms, each with a ginormous en-suite bath, and connected by a spacious living room area.

The bathrooms? Insane. We could have a party in the bathrooms and at one point, I think we did. The tub was so massive that when the kids sat inside, we couldn’t even see the top of their heads.

We were so spoilt during our stay that Kirsten woke up the next morning, pulled me towards her and whispered “Mom, this hotel is SO AWESOME, I cannot even believe it.”

And she was right. It was all the little touches by the staff that made it a truly memorable experience.

Like when we arrived, there was fresh fruits and a special hand-created chocolate platter for each of us, filled with macarons, truffles and other varieties of chocolate awesomeness. The room also had an on-call butler who would attend to our needs 24/7. In fact, our butler was so good, he could meet our needs before we even knew we had them. If we left the room for 20 minutes, we’d come back to find it all made up, clothes, folded, towels replenished, and he’d greet us with a welcome drink in hand. And he was so warm and friendly that we all looked forward to meeting him each time we got back to the room.

I mean, we’ve all been to hotels where the staff are smiling, but it’s all perfunctory so even when they say “how may I help you?”, what they really mean is “I’d much rather not so if you could move along, that would be perfect.”

But during our stay at the Mandarin Oriental, all the staff we met were so incredibly warm and genuine and they would go out of their way to make our stay extra memorable that we were so blown away.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced such incredible hospitality ever and it really felt like home – not my actual home, obviously, but the kind of home we all wish we could have. This will henceforth be the benchmark against which all other hotels will be measured against.

We can’t wait to return soon.

A Most Magical Memory

I’m down to my final post on the epic trip and I’ve saved the very best for last.

If there’s one park that makes my heart skip a beat (or a few), it’s the Magic Kingdom. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve been there, every time I cross those turnstiles, or spy the castle shimmering in the distance, or skip down main street (one does not just simply walk down main street; main street requires a bounce and a skip), or round the corner and bump into a character in costume, my heart leaps.

Magic Kingdom, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

1. Cinderella’s castle decked in Christmas lights.

castle in christmas lights

Be still, my beating heart.

We were there just in time to see Christmas decor adorn the park and goodness, IT IS BREATHTAKING. This, this is the definition of too much beauty.

2. Snow on main street

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It’s too warm for there to be any real snow in Orlando but what’s Disney without a little sprinkle of magic? It was our last night in Disney World (attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party) when snow started falling all around us on Main Street. I stood there looking up at all of it and cried tears of joy. True story.

3. Snow White eating an apple. Outside Gaston’s Tavern.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You think you’ve seen it all but then you see a tiny Snow White munching on an apple outside Gaston’s Tavern and you will be like *mind blown on so many levels*. I was about to send the apple flying out of her hands with a kungfu kick and shout “NOOOOO DON’T EAT IT!!!” but I realise this could be the alternate universe where Snow White enjoys (unpoisoned) apples and falls in love with Gaston.

Stranger things have happened.

4. Meeting the best Disney characters.

The award for best Disney meet & greet this round goes to Lady Tremaine, Anastasia and Drizella.

Ok, back up a little. We’d spent the morning meeting a whole bunch of Disney princesses and Truett was getting increasingly uncomfortable with all the saccharine overdose.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

BTW, Ariel’s Grotto is the only place you get to meet Ariel in her fins. :)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

By the time we got to Aurora, he had just about reached his limit of girly characters. But then as we walked out of the Princess Fairytale Hall, we saw Lady Tremaine and her two hilarious daughters so I mean, we had to get in line for that.

When it got to our turn, Drizella ran to Truett and shrieked “MY BELOVED PRINCE!! PLEASE SAY YOU’LL MARRY ME!!!” and fell all over my already uncomfortable little man. I’ve never seen my son look so appalled as when she fussed over him and tickled him, trying to make him say yes. Finally, he totally panicked and bolted off into the crowd.

Anastasia started yelling “COME BACK, LITTLE PRINCE!” and then she turned to us and said “he’s like literally lost, you guys” (great use of the word literally there!) before hiking up her dress and running after him.

It was the funniest thing ever; we were all laughing till we couldn’t stand.

Eating our way around the world

Oh, Epcot!

Not the flashiest of theme parks but one of the most charming for sure. It’s the kind of place that grows on you and it seems like the more time I spend there, the more in love with it I fall.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

All the things you need to do at Epcot are as follows:

Eat your way around the World Showcase

So the only thing better than being at Epcot? Is being at Epcot during the food and wine festival. The food OMG THE FOOD I HAVE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE FOOD.

During the food and wine festival, all the countries in the world showcase section put up little pop up booths with bite-sized snack portions of their signature food, wherein you get to do a little walking food tour around the world in one afternoon.

We started out at Canada (killer filet mignon & rainbow trout from Le Cellier), ate our way through England (fish and chips), France (pastries, croissants, creme brulee), Ireland (lobster pie & cheese platter), America (GRIDDLED LOBSTER TAIL HOW I MISS YOU), Germany (werthers), Japan (sushi) and Brazil (crispy pork belly & seared scallops).

We were too full to even breathe by the time we got to China but my Chinese kids were craving some Chinese food so we stopped for some Chinese noodles. Which turned out to be so weird.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And then we came across a sign that looked mighty familiar. We saw a booth labeled SINGAPORE in the distance and started running towards it hoping to see some Bak Chor Mee or Nasi Lemak. What I would have given for a delicious bowl of Laksa right then.

But alas, the only items on the menu were Seared Mahi Mahi with “Singa” Sauce and Lemongrass Curry Chicken. I’ve never tasted Singa sauce in all my years of being Singaporean so we asked the (clearly non Singaporean) lady behind the counter what went into the special sauce. She was all “it’s like a savoury sauce from Singapore” and we looked at her with our best Singaporean face like “yeah good try, there’s no such thing.”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At this point, I realise that a responsible blogger would be taking all these mouth-watering photos of beautifully-arranged food but we were mostly like FOOOOOD MUST EAT NOW and by the time I remembered to whip out my camera, they were mostly gone.

I will however, make it up with pictures of Kirsten with her precious princesses during our character dinner at Akershus.

Oh and we saw a pretty, pretty rainbow (the only one we saw during the whole trip).

Somehow I feel like something special always happens in Epcot. I can’t really place it but I think Epcot will always have a special place in my heart.

May the force be with you

Apart from Magic Kingdom (which stands alone in its unparalleled magic quotient), the kids’ favourite park was Hollywood Studios. There is so much to do that it took us 2 whole days to finish all the attractions. I’m going to attempt to fit it all in one post so here goes.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Rule #1, if you have kids aged 4-12, there’s one thing you absolutely have to do – get them enrolled in the Jedi Training Academy.

We first saw this at Disneyland (Anaheim) during our honeymoon; we were like 15 days into our marriage and I remember turning to the husband and saying “one day we will have lots of kids and those kids will be trained in the ways of the force to duel Darth Vader.”

The husband was all “um, ok good plan…”

jedi siblings

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The limited spots in the training academy fill up fast (like 30 minutes after park opening) so get there at rope drop and start running (I’m serious, don’t walk) to the sign up area. We were sprinting like maniacs and barely made it for the final few spots.

Being one of the youngest kids, Kirsten was struggling with the lightsaber activation during the training session, which led to some really priceless hilarious exchanges with the Jedi Master. But she was so determined to make it work so while the other kids took their turn fighting Darth Vader, she was at the corner practicing her activation move.

Then when it was finally her turn, the Jedi Master was all “ACTIVATE!!” and BB-ZSHOOOO, she did it and the entire audience erupted in wild cheers.

Awesome daughter is awesome.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The husband made a video of the whole sequence, go watch!! That video just kills me dead, it’s so full of win. I’m just a proud momma, I can’t be more proud.

As far as rides go, there are 3 headliners in Hollywood Studios.

1. Rock and Roller Coaster. Brace yourself for the blast off, it’s brutal.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

2. Tower of Terror. By far the scariest ride for me. I didn’t dare get on the last time and this round, both Truett and Kirsten could make the height limit so they were all “c’mon, let’s all do it together”. You guys already know what my thoughts are on being challenged by the kids to ride scary roller coasters.

Little did they know what they were in for.

It’s an elevator ride (with seats) that takes you right to the top of the tower and drops you 180 feet multiple times, except that it’s pulled by cables, so it’s worse than free-falling because you’re effectively being yanked down faster than the speed of gravity. Everyone in the elevator seemed pretty calm but I was screaming and screaming during the entire ride like “OHMYGODLETMEOUTHELPPPPPPPP.” It was all very classy and not embarrassing at all.

But hey, achievement unlocked!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

3. Toy Story Midway Mania. This is insanely fun and not scary at all, trust me. We rode this like 8 times and every time was more fun than the last.

toy story midway mania

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Ok, moving on to the shows. We’ll get to the end eventually, I promise.

There are tons of incredible shows to watch at Hollywood Studios but the two most stellar ones for me were Fantasmic! and Beauty and the Beast.

You get the laser displays and fireworks and water effects and pyrotechnics in Fantasmic!, which are all great but it’s the story that really gets you. It’s the story about the power of imagination, the triumph of good and the importance of a dream as told through the eyes of our favourite mouse (and all his friends).

fantastic

Beauty and the Beast? It’s flat out the best rendition of my favourite Disney princess story ever.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hollywood Studios is the only place you’ll get to meet the Disney Junior and (most of the) Pixar pals. Truett and Kirsten are raised heavy on a diet of Disney Junior and Pixar so they went a little mad meeting Jake, Oso, Handy Manny, Sophia, Lightning Mcqueen, Mater, Incredibles, Ralph, Venelope, Mater, Woody and Buzz, as well as Mickey and Minnie.

We’re almost there! In appreciation of your determination to stick it through to the end, I’m wrapping up with a somewhat obscure fact about Hollywood Studios. If you’re a Disney resort guest, stay for the Extra Magic Hours in Hollywood Studios because that’s when the Disney Junior block party happens.

What’s a Disney block party, you ask? It’s only the most awesome dance party you’ll every go to. If you’ve never seen Mickey dance, all I can say is that mouse has some serious moves.

Disney dance parties are on another level of awesome and best of all, it was relatively quiet so the kids got to spend some quality dance time with all the characters. Handy Manny was leading a conga line and Sofia taught Kirsten some princess dance moves, IT WAS SO COOL I have to stop gushing now.

Wilderness explorers assemble!

Since my trip to Disney World 2 years ago, I had one mission in life – which is to indoctrinate the kids in the ways of the walt. I’ve just been dreaming and dreaming and dreaming of the day I’ll finally be able to bring the kids to Disney World.

And you know what they say in Disney? Dreams really do come true.

I’ve been a Disney nerd all my life and over the years, I’ve managed to successfully turn the husband into a converted Disney nerd (yay!) and all my kids and grandkids and greatgrandkids and their greatgrandkids will go through an induction program that will turn them all into full on Disney nerds. Ain’t no two ways about it.

There is no place in the world that’s happier than Disney World. I thought of a dozen ways to say it but it all comes down to this, that Disney is just pure magic.

*I’m going to just apologise in advance because for the next few posts, this blog will be all Disney photo obnoxiousness.

Let’s kick things off with Animal Kingdom. It was the least disney-esque of all the parks for me the last trip but going there with the kids was like looking at the park through new eyes and I’m loving it much, much more.

Right at the entrance of the park, there’s a station for kids to sign up as Wilderness Explorers (like Russell from UP!). Each explorer will be given a booklet and a map to explore all the WE stations around the park – when they complete each activity, they’ll be given stickers badges to mark their achievements.

dug and russell

I’ve never seen Truett & Kirsten so enthusiastic about being wilderness explorers, it was so cute. Although my baby girl couldn’t quite suppress her inner city girl streak.

Me: guys, we’re wilderness explorers today so we’ll have to check our maps for directions ok…

Kirsten: no need lah! Just use the GPS.

2. Festival of the Lion King. Easily one of the best shows in Disney.

3. Expedition Everest. This is not for the fainthearted. I didn’t dare to go on at first so the husband and sister went on it with Truett. He came back all excited like “mom it’s so awesome you need to ride with me I will protect you please please please…”

My head was all “NO WAY!!” but when my 5-year-old is telling me that I need to be brave and he will protect me, there’s only one thing left to do – man up and get on the scary roller coaster.

Honestly? It was TERRIFYING. The moment I pulled down the restraint, I was like “please don’t let me die, please don’t let me die.” So there’s this part where you make the epic climb and you’re bracing yourself for the drop and when it reaches the top, you realise that HELL NO the track is broken and you go into panic mode and then you start plunging backwards in darkness and you involuntarily scream like a little girl.

After the ride, Truett leaned in and whispered “actually I was super scared too, good thing I can hold your hand.”

*heart melt* That’s how we do bonding sessions around here.
