Stop everything, it’s playground time

On the third day of new year, we took a break from all the visiting and went to visit the park instead. There were audible cheers from the kids and they’re right, park visiting is the very best kind of visiting there is.

After two days of blistering heat, it was just glorious, cool breeze over at Pasir Ris park. Who can resist?

Baby Finn was so excited he was like “laters y’all, imma go have me some playground fun!”

laters, y'all

He got to the play area where there were all these activity panels, of which some had cut out holes for kids to stick their heads through to take a photo. Probably meant to be cute but baby Finn has a thing where headless figures seriously creep him out so he was walking past all the panels and he started getting real concerned about The Place With All The Creepy Headless People.

Truett was so tickled by baby Finn’s horrified, creeped out face but after he was done laughing his head off, he took his brother’s hand and walked him through the whole thing, telling him not to be afraid because “kor kor is here”.

Which is exactly what big brothers are for. They may laugh at you from time to time but they’re always there to hold your hand when it gets scary.

According to these guys, playground time is “more awesome than anything else in the world”. Except maybe ice-cream time.

Having a Sunday Funday

I love my Sunday brunches and even though it’s madness to herd 3 kids around on a weekend where one is supposed relax and take it easy, the allure of delicious bacon, good coffee and some fresh air is often too difficult to resist. Besides, these little family outings, while fraught with mayhem, are also usually the highlight of the kids’ week. Especially when there are playgrounds involved.

It’s been a while since I captured some of these moments on camera so last weekend, I brought my trusty DSLR along for a couple of happy pictures.

It’s so cheesy but watching them so happy makes me happy.

I need to do this more often.

The Perfect Party

You know how kids’ birthday parties are, right? Venue, theme, decor, balloons, streamers, pretty hanging things, party bags, games, activities, cake. OH, THE CAKE. Back in my time, we’re lucky to get a tacky 2-D one with a deformed dinosaur that looked like Barney’s mutated half-cousin. These days, the cakes are jaw-dropping and I won’t be surprised if in another couple of years, kids will be having life-sized cakes that will sing and do cartwheels on cue.

It’s crazy having to put together a party and I’m glad they only come around once a year. Plus we usually make it a combined affair so we only have to go through the madness once.

This year’s birthday bash for the kids happened yesterday and let me just say that I’ve never been to a more awesome party in all my 30 years.

First of all, the venue. Prior to the party, we sourced for over a dozen venues all over Singapore to find a suitable location. We wanted something cosy, chill and preferably outdoors (but not too hot) where the adults could enjoy a nice afternoon tea. But most importantly, we needed a place to contain the mayhem and keep the kids entertained.

So when we visited Seb’s Bistro & The Playhouse at Rochester, we fell in love with the beautiful al fresco dining area with lush surroundings. That there was an entire 2-story air-conditioned playhouse right next to it made it a winner. It was perfect.

Being as aesthetically-challenged as we are, decor usually means going out and buying a bunch of balloons, some banners and taping them randomly to the walls. But we got smart so instead of struggling with the decor and party planning like we usually do, we handed over all the planning to Jen and Van, the lovely ladies from Party Perfect.

Best. Decision. Ever.

All we needed to do was to pick a theme and let them do all the work. The kids are still in their pirate phase so this was a no-brainer…Scallywags and Buccaneers, Ahoy!

When we arrived, it was like stepping into a pirate wonderland, which is the nice kind made for cute little pint-sized pirates. There were gorgeous pirate loot bags, a pirate ship with cut out figurines, personalized pirate cupcakes, pirate hats, a treasure chest, pirate cutlery, pirate balloons, and pretty hanging pirate cloth things.

In addition to the dining area downstairs, The Playhouse also allocated the 2nd-floor party room for the kids to hang out.

The folks at Seb’s Bistro take their parties very seriously so they don’t just leave the kids in the room on their own. They pull out all the stops to make sure the kids are engaged and having fun, which is a tall order considering that we had kids ranging from aged 2 to 10.

Meet Imran, an incredible party host. He conducted the games, sang songs, made them dance, got them to do silly actions and did a spectacular job of keeping the kids entertained.

We also had Queenie from Artybody work her body-painting magic on the kids during the party. Ok, seriously, her work is amazing. Each person she paints is a stunning piece of art and she’s able to do anything from superheroes to sparkly princesses. I’ll never forget her epic Hulk creation during Happee Day almost 2 years ago.

The paints are totally safe for kids as she uses only professional face paints which are U.S. FDA-approved, as well as cosmetic-grade glitter and stickers. They were able to last the entire afternoon and washing off was really easy. We just had to rinse with water and a gentle cleanser, so no painful face scrubbing involved.

Just look at this final product on Tru’s hands. Consider my mind blown.

Kirsten naturally went for a princess look and she was so pleased with her “pretty princess paint”, as she called it for the rest of the afternoon.

Remember how I was saying that the cakes are out of control these days? I’ve seen some unbelievable cake creations in the past couple of years but this, ladies and gentlemen, this masterpiece by The Patissier totally takes the cake.

I’ve heard some really amazing things about The Patissier, like how their head baker and co-owner was trained in the time-honored techniques of the great French patissiers at the Cordon Bleu, London. That their designs are a joy to behold. And that their cakes taste even better than they look.

But nothing prepared me for this cake.

Believe it or not, almost everything is edible. There’s the giant pirate ship made out of brownie and icing sugar, the pair of pirate figurines, the palm trees, the gold-dusted skulls, the gold doubloons, the treasure map, the chest of jewels, the sea animals and shells all on a gorgeous seawater cake board.

Then at the bottom were 5 x 500g mousse cakes made up of 3 separate flavors: Chocolate Dream, Strawberry Delight and Mango Madness. All 3 flavors were ridiculously delicious, which explains why they were all gone in record time.

Here’s Kirsten still admiring the cake while munching on her fries.

We had the most fabulous time and a heartfelt thank you to everyone who made it possible. As well as all the friends and family who took the time to come by.

Till next year, mateys!

There’s no Friday like Special Friday

Last Friday was supposed to be like any other Friday. The kids had school. I had work to finish, errands to run and chores to clear but I didn’t feel like doing any of that. So I woke up and decided to declare it Special Friday.

Because I can.

On Special Friday, the kids get to skip school, I get to skip everything else and we all get to go out for a day of fun. It just so happened that a good friend was having Special Friday too so we packed the kids and spent the day at Jurong Bird Park together.

The kids were thrilled out of their minds when I told them. “NO SCHOOL TODAY? AND WE’RE GOING TO THE BIRD PARK?? WITH OUR BEST FRIENDS??? YAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!”

Kirsten has a thing for cows so when she saw these cows at the entrance, my little Kao ran up to them to smother them with hugs and kisses.

According to the brochure, the bird park is home to some 5,000 birds and 380 species but the whole time we were there, we saw a grand total of like 4 species. Which were these macaws.

A bunch of penguins.

Some flamingos.

And this statue bird that I was convinced was a statue but turned out to be a live bird. It just stood (sat?) there and glared at us with its little beady statue eyes and only when we moved away, it turned its head and eyeballed us until we were out of sight.

If I ever need a scary statue, I’d skip the gargoyle and go with this scary bird instead. Folks are going to walk past and go “cheh, just another scary-looking statue” and as they walk away, the bird will slowly turn its head to look at them and then BAM, they will freak the hell out. Mission accomplished.

So anyway, after seeing a handful of birds, we got to the new water play area called Birds of Play and that was the end of our birdwatching plans.

We asked the kids the obligatory question “Would you like to see more birds or stop and play?” and they were all “Are you kidding? Do you not see this magnificent structure? GIMME WATERRRRR!!!”

And that’s how we spent the rest of the day. Or rather, that’s how the kids spent the rest of the day while we stood around trying not to get wet. It was totally more fun that it sounds.

Like all outings, it was exhausting but I’m really starting to like Special Friday. We’ll have to do this again sometime.

PS. I’m having a Hot Wheels Wall Tracks giveaway on the Mother, Inc Facebook page. Contest closes tomorrow!

Stand up tall on tippy toes

We’ve all been nursing a flu over the past couple of days so it’s been a weekend of drippy noses and mopey baby faces.

There were mopey adult faces too but I’m not cruel enough to make you see pictures of those.

When the kids felt better, we brought them out to Ikea for a walk. We’ve been to Ikea many times with the kids but they’ve never been in the kids play area because Kirsten never made the height limit and Truett wouldn’t go in without her.

Solidarity is a big deal around here.

Every time we checked her height, she would say, “I cannot go in, I’m too short.” Tru would offer her helpful advice like “you must stand very straight so you will be taller like me” but no matter how straight she stood, she was still too short.

This time, she stood as straight as she could and even though she still missed by a hair’s breadth, the lady at the counter had compassion on her and let her in.

“I’m taller like a BIG girl now,” she said proudly as she took her brother’s hand and walked in.

Just like that, this baby ain’t mopey no more.

And not forgetting this week’s Hipstamatic Happiness.

Have a great week, you guys!

Horsing around part 2: minus the horses

Here’s the second part to the horse story. After spending the bulk of our morning detouring to the stable, we decided to continue our search for that elusive playground in Pasir Ris Park. Also, it was part of our plan to tire them out to the point of complete exhaustion, which in gaming terms is called KO.

We asked around but nobody seemed to be sure exactly where it was, and the most helpful answer was that it was too far to walk. After circling round Pasir Ris a couple of times, we finally found it.

The last time I came here was a decade ago, where the only structure was the iconic spiderweb, you know, the rope climbey thing that looks like a spiderweb. Now it’s a massive playground with fancy thingamajigs that we didn’t know how to operate. I mean, like this spinning satellite dish. Anyone knows what this is for? The husband got on and almost couldn’t get off because you can’t make it stop the moment you start moving.

And this works like a see-saw, except more technologically advanced.

There were also the usual playground regulars.

My favorite? These.

In a nutshell, this park gets my vote for the best (free) outdoor playground in Singapore. And the cherry on top is how it’s so shady with all the trees so you can just set up your mats and read a book while the kids go crazy. Everybody wins.

Also, did I mention it’s 5 minutes from home? Provided I don’t get lost again.
