Dancing on hilltops

After a divine brunch of truffle oil scrambled eggs on Saturday, we stumbled upon a hidden gem tucked away in a little nook near Bukit Timah Saddle Club. We did the only thing we could when one makes an unexpected discovery, which was to spend the rest of the morning dancing on hilltops, flapping imaginary wings and rolling down hills.

It was literally an off-the-beaten-path adventure – the very best kind.

For once, the weather was cool (explains the long sleeves) and the grassy slopes made it feel like a scene right out from The Sound of Music. Except without the Sound or the Music. Or Julie Andrews. Which basically makes it a pirated version with terrible sound. But with much cuter kids.

I’ll just let the pictures do the talking.

There were these huge leaves lying on the ground just asking to be picked up and turned into wings. They were happy to oblige, as always.

Ok, that’s the lot. Have a good one this week!

Special only because it was so ordinary.

Just like a rainy Saturday calls for a cup of hot chocolate and some snuggle time under the covers, a sunny Sunday calls for bubble blowers and a picnic at the Botanics.

On picnic Sundays (and basically any other day), our responsibilities are pretty clear. The husband does the crazy running with the bubble thingy and I do the chilling out under the shade. Occasionally, I also help out with the motivation bit by calling out for him to run faster.

With Kirsten turning 2 in a couple of weeks, the kids are at an optimum age to max out the enjoyment factor on these family outings. When they were younger, they used to get grouchy if it was too hot, too humid, too sticky, too dirty, too hungry and we would be spending most of the time trying to make them feel comfortable.

Now it’s like “FOOD? WHO NEEDS FOOD? LOOK THERE ARE BUBBLES!” Which makes life a lot easier and so much more fun.

These Sundays are extra special to me because at some point in their lives, they’re not going to want to spend their Sunday mornings running around chasing bubbles with us. I’m hoping it’s later than sooner but when it happens, I want to know I’ve given them enough baby hugs and blown enough bubbles and soaked up every moment spent with them.

When they’re off with their super cool friends doing whatever cool kids do in 15 years, it’s going to be a lot easier to let them go knowing that I made the most out of all the time I had with them.

It was one of those Sundays that’s special simply because it was so ordinary. Exactly the kind I want to remember.

Back to the Botanics and a visit to Jacob Ballas

Our weekends are finally returning to some form of normalcy and by that I mean that we’ve resumed our regular Sunday brunches, this time at the Botanic Gardens. It’s a nice routine, being out for some fresh air and wide open spaces with the kids. We’ve missed this.

On the menu that morning was also a third attempt to check out the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. The past two times, locating it proved to be an elusive affair. Apparently it’s within walking distance from the Visitor’s Centre but since my definition of walking distance is decidedly shorter than most people when we have 2 kids in tow, we went for the driving option instead. But the carpark is tucked away inside another carpark and we all got a little impatient and gave up after circling round the Bukit Timah area. Twice.

This time, with a little bit of determination and a map, we finally found it (Use the NUS carpark entrance if you’re looking for it – it’s not listed at the entrance but that’s the right one). In addition to a flower trail and pond, there was also a water play and sand play area with a playground. Ok, as far as playgrounds go, this one wasn’t as impressive as the one at Pasir Ris Park but still, nice enough.

Till this day, I still get all icky about sand but I’m glad baby girl has outgrown that phase. She was happily shoving sand into her shorts and diapers while I watched in horror because momma’s going to be the one cleaning sand bits from between the folds of her thighs.

They rounded it up with some water play (don’t do the water before the sand – all you will get is muah chee) to cool down a little. All the other kids came decked in their swim gear but we had no idea there even was a water play area so we took off Tru’s top and Kirsten’s shorts before setting them loose.

The next time we go, we’ll definitely prep their swim stuff and a bunch of water toys.

I can’t believe I’m happy that the weekend is over

Been a rough weekend. The husband had to go out of town for work from Friday and the morning he left, me and Kirsten came down with a nasty stomach flu. It’s no party having to have to watch two kids (one of them sick too) when you’re comatose. I caved at about 5pm and had to call my mom for reinforcements but later that same evening, she came down with it too. Fun times.

Somehow we made it through the weekend and I hope that doesn’t have to happen again for a long, long time. Or ever.

I decided to bring baby girl down for some fresh air yesterday even though she was still a little weak and it was minutes before a thunderstorm. Like come on, even the weather was being ominous; just get a grip already. In the 5 minutes that we were down, I managed to get these shots and fiddled with them in Lightroom for a different effect.

Tell me what you think.

Where we got a big sweep. And I don’t mean the lottery.

My brother got married over the weekend in a gorgeous, gorgeous wedding. It’s been a long time coming and we’re all thrilled to have a new addition to the family.

My new sister-in-law, henceforth to be known as big sweep (it’s Chinese for your elder brother’s wife, don’t ask).

Truett was the page boy (his very first time) and I had to bribe him with peanuts to make sure he walked down the aisle exactly like he practiced. I was half expecting him to freeze or choke with all the attention but just before he was supposed to make his grand entrance, he was all like “Mommy, Truett walk very well can get 5 peanuts” and I was all “Tru, if you walk very well, you can get 10.”

My boy did such a fantastic job walking that he ended up with 28 peanuts. After he was done with the peanuts, he said “Truett need to walk very well again.” Um, nice try but that’s a one-time offer; promotion no longer valid.

Congrats, big brother. Now hurry go have some babies so the kids will have some cousins to play with.

The fun has just begun

So we went to Universal Studios again this week, this time with my mom and my sis, who’s back from Melbourne for her hols. Holidays are when family makes time for each other and there’s no better way than to soak up a bit of the Christmas magic in a theme park. You get to be busy all year but come December, it’s time to hit the brakes and do the quality time with the people that are important to you. Do the parties and the gatherings and coffees before the new year comes around.

At least, that’s how we roll.

On to the peek-tures. The characters were all pimped out in their festive gear, even though it was 35 degrees out. Also, I have a thing for collecting pictures with mascots. Some people collect stamps, I collect pictures with characters. Stop judging me.

Then when you run out of characters, make up your own.

This is my mom on a super grandma carousel, well, because she’s one. We even managed to get her to try The Mummy ride as a single rider, no less. She got real queasy after and claims I conned her into it but all I said was “it goes round and round, not that scary” verbatim. To be fair, I didn’t remember it to be quite so scary but then again, the last time I went on, my eyes were closed for most of the ride.

If you’re looking for a nice place to take pictures, there’s this street next to Spielberg’s show at New York. Love it.

You know what they say, family time is good for the soul and I wholeheartedly concur.

This is turning out to be one of the best Decembers ever and there’s still almost three weeks of it left. That’s like waking up at thinking it’s 6am when it’s actually 1.45am and realizing that you’ve still got another 5 solid hours of blissful sleep. Somehow, you always end up making the most of it, which is exactly what I plan to do.
