Princess Golden Bottoms approves

Girls are so awesome to have but as it turns out, both my girls have very delicate bottoms. I’ve had to deal with severe diaper rash twice (once for Kirsten and once for Hayley) and neither of those times were any fun at all.

She’s all smiley now but Princess Golden Bottoms here just recovered from a massive nappy rash episode a month ago and it was brutal. Her entire nappy area got all red and inflamed and covered with angry bumps, which made her super screamy all day. :(

The doctor prescribed her some steroid cream and we had to air her bum so for several days, I was walking around with a bare-bottomed baby, getting peed and pooped on multiple times a day. That’s ok though, I’ll take being pooped on if it helps my baby feel better, no question about it. But you know what’s a better solution? Not having to deal with nappy rash at all. Prevention being better than cure and all that.

Since then, I’ve been paranoid about keeping her bottom clean and dry, so I guess you can say that I know a thing or two about getting the right diapers.

Let’s talk about all the things you need to look out for in a tape diaper.

1. Breathable.

You want your baby’s skin to be able to breathe because fresh air is good for delicate baby bottoms. What you don’t want is a stuffy, moist diaper that traps all the bacteria and yeast because that is the perfect recipe for a massive onset of diaper rash.

The new Merries tape diapers have a new triple layer air-through system which increases breathability for longer lasting dryness.

triple-layer-air-through-system-2

  • 1st layer: Light airy mesh material that is gentle on the skin. The mesh reduces the skin contact area by half, expelling moisture and stuffiness through the gaps between the diaper and skin.
  • 2nd layer: Breathable air-through absorbent layer. Moisture passes through this absorbent layer in the process of absorbing pee.
  • 3rd layer: All round breathable sheet. The entire sheet is breathable, drawing away the moisture from pee and sweat.

Compared to the previous version, the new improvement increases breathability by 40%, providing long-lasting dryness for the baby. This means that I don’t have to worry about missing a diaper change when we’re out and about or when she’s sleeping through the night. In fact, 97% of mothers in Japan find the triple-layer air-through design means a drier bottom for their babies. (Kao survey, September 2015)

Truett helped me with a small experiment to find out exactly how breathable the new Merries diapers are.

First, we poured a cup of hot water onto the diaper.

Then we flipped it over and put a clear glass over the back. Just look at the condensation inside the glass.

All the heat and moisture was drawn out instantly instead of getting trapped inside the diaper.

2. Absorbent

A good diaper instantly draws in the pee and poo, locking it away instead of letting it all accumulate on the surface of the diaper. The key is maintaining as little pee/poo to skin contact as possible at all times.

With Merries tape diapers, the wavy and recessed surface of the soft sheet traps and holds poo, preventing it from dispersing, while the super absorbent sheet instantly draws in and locks away pee and soft poo, leaving the diaper surface drier, thereby preventing diaper rash.

3. Soft

When it comes to anything that’s in contact with my baby’s skin 24 hours a day, softer = better.

These new diapers are incredibly soft, plus its inner wavy surface reduces the skin contact area so that it does not stick to baby’s skin, making it gentle to her delicate skin.

4. Convenience

With the colour-changing wetness indicators, you will know it’s time to change the diaper once the strips change color from yellow to dark blue.

See these yellow strips? No need for a diaper change just yet.

Okay, time to change that diaper!

Hayley has been on the new Merries Tape diapers for the past week and it’s true – they are incredibly soft and dry and breathable. After a whole night without a diaper change, her bum still feels dry and clean. This is the face of a baby who just woke up to a comfy bottom. Bliss.

Merries is like the gold standard of diapers, and I’m not surprised that it’s the No 1 baby diaper brand in Japan for 9 years running.

The new Merries tape diapers also come in a brand new super cute packaging that looks like this.

Get out of jail free pass

From time to time, the kids will be up to no good and they’ll end up in various forms of trouble which is fairly normal, but what’s fascinating is that they each have a very different coping mechanism when they get disciplined. To their credit, they’ve learnt very quickly that the least effective method of getting out of trouble around here is to be all sulky or have a meltdown.

Instead, they’ve each discovered their own get out of jail free pass and practiced it to perfection.

The Negotiator

We make it a point to maintain an open communication with the kids so we tell them that they can always talk to us and we’ll try our best to hear them out even during the times where my blood pressure is rapidly escalating. The good thing is that they will talk to us when they’re upset but this also means that they are very good at negotiating their way out of problems.

Tru: Um, mom, remember you said that we can talk to you even when you are angry? Ummm…how about can you like make us face the wall instead?

Me: No. Wall facing is way too easy for you guys now.

Tru: Or how about no iPad for a week?

Me: Also too easy.

Tru: Okay, 1 month no iPad? And I’ll do extra chores as well.

Me: Eh, this is not a fish market where you get to haggle but fine, I’ll consider it.

Kirsten has nailed a very effective method wherein she quickly owns the mistake with a lot of remorse and straight up asks for another chance. It’s hard to say no to a kid who tells you they’re sorry and wants another chance, especially one who tries her best to be a good kid all the time.

Kirsten: I’m sorry mom, I know it’s wrong, can you please give me another chance?

Me: This is how deterrence works, to help you to learn not to do it again.

Kirsten: I will learn, I promise. I will try my best not to do it again. Just give me one more chance.

Me: Sighhhhhhh

The Fate Acceptor

This is a killer move patented by Finn and his doleful heartbreaker eyes. When he’s in trouble, this kid just puts on his brave face and accepts his punishment without complaining. And it’s not like a reverse psychology ploy either because I’ve called his bluff several times and he just takes it, which makes it even more effective.

Finn: You can make me face the wall if you like mom.

Me: Baby, it’s not that I like to give you a timeout, but I need you to listen can?

Finn: Ok, I will listen and be a good boy. Do I still need to face the wall?

*stands at the wall looking all sad*

Me: Fine, just go play.

Theo is impossible to discipline because this baby is disarmingly adorable and too smart for his own good. Or exactly the right amount of smart for his own good.

Me: Hey, no snatching toys, Theo!

Theo: *flashes me his widest smile*

Me: I’m serious, baby. Don’t flash me that smile right now.

Theo: Baby Theo is so cute right?

Me: I know you’re cute, but no snatching allowed. Go say sorry to kor kor Finn.

Theo: SORRY KOR KOR FINN I WON’T SNATCH YOUR TOYS.

Me: You have to mean it and not do it again ok?

Theo: Ok. Um mom…can I have a hug?

Me: Yes but URGH!!

Truett

My #1 fan

When I started the blog, I knew that one day, I’d want the kids to read it. After all this time spent writing, this would be a time capsule built for them one post at a time over at this little corner of the internet.

And when they’re ready, they’d be able to draw out all the memories of their growing up years strand by strand like in a Pensieve and experience what it was like for me to live through them. They would have a collection of words and pictures to look back on; to know that in every single moment of their lives (in all the good and bad and difficult ones), they were so loved.

From time to time, I’d show some posts to the kids and previously they’d be all disinterested like “um, okay cool“, which is a patronising way of saying “that’s really boring, mom“.

But recently, Truett has been asking to read the blog using his allocated weekly screen time, which is kind of a big deal because out of all the awesomely fun things he could be doing like playing the Wii or watching his favourite shows, he actually wants to use it to read the blog like it’s a treat.

I asked him if he was ok having all these moments in his life being out there on the internet. It wasn’t a conversation I was able to have when he was younger but now that he’s 8, I’d want to respect his right to privacy if he wanted it.

Hey Tru, if it’s weird for you, you can always tell mommy ok. I won’t write stuff about you unless you’re comfortable with it.

Of course it’s ok! I like reading it so you can write more,” he said, before proceeding to instruct me on the kind of posts I needed to do more of. “I like the ones with a lot of photos of the cute babies and them pretending to say stuff.

You mean like this one?”

Ya, it’s very funny. And I also like those about me.

Yes, sir! But if you ever feel like you don’t want to be on the blog, you’ll talk to me?”

Don’t worry, you can keep writing. I’ll be your biggest fan.

My son just told me he’s my biggest fan. :) 7 years doing this and I think this is the most glorious moment I’ve had as a blogger.
