Getting Mystica-ed at the Night Safari

We were at the Night Safari’s Mystica over the weekend and it occurred to me that even though we love zoos and animals (we visited 3 zoos and 2 wildlife parks during one trip to Melbourne), we’ve hardly been to the Night Safari. Maybe just once or twice since it opened.

I have to admit that we subconsciously steer clear of the touristy type of attractions back home – partly because we feel like it’s always going to be there and we’ll have a chance to visit anytime. And then things get busy and it turns out to be never.

Well, that’s going to change starting right now.

If you haven’t been to the Night Safari for a while, December is the best time to do it because that’s when Mystica happens – when the whole park turns into a dazzling wildlife wonderland.

Also, December is usually the time where parents start putting together activities to keep the kids meaningfully occupied and instead of doing the usual mall or movie routine, the kids are going to have way more fun on a nighttime adventure with all the animals, so it all works out.

At Mystica, the lights are up everywhere and the costumes + performers are out in full swing. Like these flamingo dancers. When I was a kid, I used to get confused by flamenco dancers and I’d call them flamingo dancers but these, these were definitely flamingos.

And this particular plant, which I believe to be a venus boobtrap flytrap.

And this uhm, I have no idea what this is. Some kind of plant/bird hybrid? But points for effort, double exclamation point!!

The last time we visited the Night Safari, we didn’t feel quite adventurous enough to venture out on the walking trails lugging two tired toddlers so we just hopped on the tram and that was it. This time, we were determined to check out not one, but all four trails. I mean, the kids don’t have wilderness explorer badges for nothing, right?

Armed with their maps and spirit of adventure, they led the way starting from the wallaby trail.

It turned out to be so much fun.

A wallaby hopped right up to us in the middle of the trail and we saw tigers, lions, hyenas, leopards, flying squirrels snakes and roof rats, among other cool/gross animals, all just chilling out doing their nighttime thing. Baby Finn is really into making animal sounds lately so he had a great time roaring to his heart’s content.

There was a bit of a queue for the tram after we were done so we hopped out for some neon face painting. It’s like ordinary face painting, except with neon glow in the dark paints.

And what’s face painting without a bit of role-playing? Truett spent the rest of the evening trying to sneak up on Kirsten like a lion while she flapped her little butterfly wings flittering around.

There was also a glow in the dark photo booth where they could admire each others’ glowing face paint. In the dark. It was all kinds of cool.

After having visited quite a number of zoos, I can say for a fact that our Night Safari is hands down, one of the best in the world.

We’ll be doing this again soon.

*Mystica 2013: Wildlife Wonderland will be happening this weekend (20-21 December), as well as 27 through to 31 December, from 6.30pm – 9.30pm.

A week to Christmas

This year just got a lot more christmassy. Why? For the first time in my life, I’ve got all (seriously, ALL!) the presents sorted and it’s still a full week till Christmas. If that doesn’t deserve some applause, I don’t know what does.

presents!

Every year, there’ll always be that one or two gifts that I forgot/couldn’t find and come the last weekend before Christmas, I’m back out on Orchard Road with my battle gloves fighting off all the last minute shoppers for that elusive last minute present and then after the whole song and dance, we’ll give up and fall back on getting some boring Egyptian cotton bath sheets.

Been there and I’m so done with that. The days of frenzied last minute Christmas shopping is over. Me and my pukey pregnant self will put sit back and enjoy the week before Christmas the way it’s supposed to be enjoyed.

I got the kids to sit down and we made a list of all the things we wanted to do from now till the end of the year, in order of importance.

1. Bake a cake (Truett’s list)

2. Dance Party (Kirsten’s list)

3. Picnic (Truett’s list)

4. Nap (My list)

5. Make a birthday card for Jesus (Kirsten’s list)

6. Nap (My list)

7. Build a snowman(??!!) (Kirsten’s list) – we’ll have to improvise

8. Eat cake (Finn’s list *according to Kirsten) – although quite easily done once we get #1 sorted

Btw, is it just me or are these two starting to have the same face?

9. Learn a magic trick (Truett’s list)

10. Nap (My list)

Kidspeak

What is up with girls and princesses?

Me: Hey sweetie, what would you like to be when you grow up?

Kirsten: A princess!

Me: If you want to be a real princess, you’ll have to marry a prince and there are very few of those to go around.

Kirsten: What if I just want to be a pretend princess.

Me: Oh, that’s much easier. Ok, close your eyes.

*I sprinkled some pretend fairy dust on her eyelids and made her open them again*

Me: There you go, princess Kirsten.

I’ve been asked about what it is with girls and princesses and I have no idea. I do know that my spunky little girl adores them though. In my world of make believe, I’ve much preferred to be a supreme court judge over a princess but I turned out to be neither so that was that.

At first, I was resistant to the whole princess madness and I tried to steer her in other more down to earth directions. Like maybe a rock star or artist or writer but she had her heart set on being a princess so over the years, I’ve learnt a lot from my daughter’s obsession with all things princessy. I guess you can call me a reformed princess convert.

I asked Kirsten why she wanted to be a princess and she told me the following:

1. Pretty dresses are nice.

True that. I’ve never been much into them myself but I can see the value in poofy dresses with lots of frills. You can twirl them, dance in them, swish them around when you walk…so many different uses!

2. Princesses use their powers for good.

I think she means privileges. Princesses have a responsibility to look out for others who need help and go out of their way to do it. WIth great power and all that. I think she might have gotten mixed up with spiderman a little bit but still, all good values.

3. Princesses keep their promises.

Can’t argue with that.

In all likelihood, she’s not going to end up being a princess but it’s what makes her eyes light up and I’m not about to squash that out of her. Maybe one day, she’ll be all princessed out and she might want to be a goth/hipster/zither player (please, God, no!!) and we’ll figure out a way to help her chase those dreams.

Besides, I asked Truett what he wanted to be when he grew up and he said “angry bird.” Now that’s a tough one.
